The mayor and other city officials of the City of Auburn and ‘LA Arts’ at the inauguration of my sculpture of ‘Big Bass’, in the newly designed Anniversary Park on the shore of the Androscoggin river.
This drawing was submitted as the concept plan for this public art work
Unloading of the raw block with a weight of 17,400 pounds (8 metric tons) requires a heavy crane
A crane had to be hired to unload the work piece from a delivery truck and place it on the work platform.
Sculptor Thomas Berger sitting beneath the raw stone for his sculpture Big Bass
The stone had a weight of over 17,000 pounds. The motiv has been drawn on the stone surface and work can begin. As the stone is sculpted, the drawing dissappears and needs to be renewed periodically on the newly exposed surfaces.
Almost done - when the stone is wet the color deepens into a pleasant fishy salmon-brown
‘Big Bass' is large enough for some exciting climbing and fish-riding.
