Relief sculpture combines features of two-dimensional and three-dimensional art and is often divided into bas, medium and high relief. This sculpting form offers possibilities to bring context and ‘storytelling’ into the sculpting work. It is easier to combine multiple sculptural elements in a relief than in a full round sculpture. A background can be used to create context. Relief work can also be used to enhance any flat surface, such as a step or a bench. I am especially fond of relief work that is set into the walls of buildings, such as in old churches in Europe.
