I painted these fish species of the Niger River in 1987 upon returning to Niger for an extended visit. The lungfish inhabited a periodic wetland to the east of Tillabery. All other specimen were caught in the Niger River. My friend Alain Litaudon provided most of these fishes - merci Alain! For the identification I used a book published by the Ministry of Agriculture Northern Nigeria: Fish and Fisheries of Northern Nigeria by William Reed. The original paintings were acquired by the German Volunteer Service (DED).
