Unfortunately I do not have good photos of my many paintings from New York and New England which I painted when I was visiting in the early Nineties.
Niger is located between Algeria in the North and Nigeria in the South. Most of the country is desert or Sahel, only turning green during the short rainy season.
I lived and worked in this town on the Niger river for three years.
I painted these fish species of the Niger River in 1987 upon returning to Niger for an extended visit. The lungfish inhabited a periodic wetland to the east of Tillabery. All other specimen were caught in the Niger River. My friend Alain Litaudon provided most of these fishes - merci Alain! For the identification I used a book published by the Ministry of Agriculture Northern Nigeria: Fish and Fisheries of Northern Nigeria by William Reed. The original paintings were acquired by the German Volunteer Service (DED).

I had these in my house once in a while (in Niger). They are huge and look scary but it helps to know they do not have poison glands!

I drew these buildings of a French farm and felt compelled to modify the scene. There was an unpleasant mood around this place which I felt from the first minute and which was confirmed throughout my 2-months stay there.
